Our District Council Candidates for Thursday 2nd May 2019

Tom Tyson

Arbury - Tom Tyson

Tom grew up in Hertfordshire and, after periods of study and work in Germany and France, later returned to his home county, where he served for many years as a head of department at a successful local comprehensive school. Tom now works as a freelance translator. He has lived in Bygrave with his wife since 2000 and has two daughters. His roots are well established in the area as he also previously lived in Ashwell. Tom wants to make sure there is a clear voice representing Arbury on the District Council and that local growth and development enhance the lives of residents of all ages, bringing new benefits while still conserving the things that make the area special and unique.

Rob Lambie

Baldock Town - Rob Lambie

Rob Lambie lives in Baldock, just off the High Street, with his partner. He is a freelance factual television producer and has worked on programmes that have been broadcast on the BBC, ITV Channel 4, and Channel 5. Rob is a keen football supporter and has two young daughters. He says: "I have been watching as the Conservatives treat Baldock with disregard. The recent fiasco with household bin collections is a perfect example of how the cost of our Tory council and Tory councillors has gone up, but the service has worsened. Every year the council tax increases and so do the excuses from the current councillors as to why services haven't improved. My family live here and I want the very best for this area. As a Disctrict Councillor I will work hard to improve the lives of local people and will drive the Council to work harder for us and improve it's services."

Sam North

Cadwell - Sam North

Sam is the candidate for Cadwell. Describing himself as an ambitious reformist, Sam has already made a substantial impact on society. He has worked in numerous industries including Property Development, Sewage, Security and Policing. Whilst working as a police officer he delivered change that impacted the way police forces work up and down the country. He now runs a small business and volunteers to write policy for the Liberal Democrats. He said "It is more important than ever that we, the people recover our voices from the broken politics that plagues our society. I offer change from the stagnant two-party politics that has dominated North Hertfordshire for so long. Not only are we currently going through an unprecedented time of chaos but Cadwell has been ignored, the villages are being ignored." Make your voice heard and vote for Sam this May.

Suzanne Bates

Ermine - Suzanne Anderton

Originally from the Peak District in Derbyshire, Suzie moved to the rural community of Barkway ten years ago. She is passionate about environmental issues, particularly the impact of single use plastics and the increase in the amount of plastic litter we see in our countryside and farmland. She commented "The volume of litter strewn across our country lanes and fields has grown at an alarming rate. It is worrying to see empty cans, bottles and plastic wrappers polluting the local farmland and ruining the beautiful countryside in which we live. More has to be done, on both a central and local government level, to ensure that litter and commercial waste is disposed of properly and where possible recycled." Profoundly against Brexit Suzie believes that it is local businesses who are taking the brunt of the chaos currently being witnessing in Westminster. "The UK voting to leave the European Union sadness me greatly. I voted Remain and I still believe that as a nation we are stronger and more secure being in the EU rather than out. The Referendum was divisive and the result has split the nation. Regardless of what the future brings we now have to work together to unite our communities and regain trust with the people of this country who have lost faith in the political system. I believe that it is time to challenge the political status quo and that's why Liberal Democrats supporters have to come together to challenge the Tories and Labour."

Hitchin Bearton May 2018

Hitchin Bearton - Jon Clayden

Jon has lived in Bearton ward for over eight years. He strongly believes that, in this era of polar extremes and echo chambers, there is a vital need for more moderate voices to stand up and make themselves heard. As a university lecturer and scientist, Jon's priorities at the national level include higher education and R&D, where the UK is world-leading but can't afford to be complacent. And as the proud husband of a hardworking Spaniard, he also has a lot of personal investment in the unfolding political disaster of Brexit. On a local level he supports protecting children's playgrounds, and reversing the unpopular and poorly thought-out brown bin charge.

He is passionate about getting young people more engaged in local and national politics. Josh is proud to be the candidate for Letchworth Grange ward. Sean Prendergast May 2018

Letchworth South West - Sean Prendergast

Sean is a Housing Officer in Letchworth and has worked in housing for over six years. Through his work he has managed to implement projects to support local residents and cares passionately about helping people and improving communities. Sean is a big believer in liberal values and would like residents to have a greater say in local decision making. He feels that the Conservatives are taking people for granted and ignoring public opinion. He commented "I want us all to live in an area that we can be proud of, but, for this to be achieved, we need a local representative that will pro-actively listen to and address our concerns. I believe I can be that representative. I was honoured to stand as your Liberal Democrat candidate for Letchworth South West last May, where we overtook Labour as the main opposition to the Conservatives in this area. With your support, we can win this ward and make the real changes that we need. I campaigned heavily last year regarding the 'brown bin tax' and it is now clear to see that this has turned into a complete fiasco. Bins are not being collected as promised and the Council has been unable to ascertain who has and hasn't paid for the service. It is unfair on local residents and it didn't have to be this way. I will always campaign for fairness. I will ensure your views are heard and fought for."

Carol Stanier

Royston Heath - Carol Stanier

Carol made her home in Royston nearly ten years ago and loves the area. She is an active Town Councillor for part of Heath ward and her young children attend a local school. This makes her passionate about children's and family services, which are being cut back and back in the current climate. She is active in the community, running a local German conversation group and being involved in her school's "Friends" group. She has campaigned on, amongst other things, the brown bin tax and on-street parking in Royston. As a scientist by training, she always tries to make decisions based on rational thought and evidence. Her experience of living abroad has taught her to be curious about and inclusive of other cultures and mindsets. She said "I have always been a Liberal Democrat supporter and voter, though I joined the party just after the referendum in 2016. Whether we are in or out of the EU, I want to make sure that the whole of the British people get the facilities and services that they require and deserve. I intend to be as approachable and open as possible to all those from my ward who come to me with ideas and questions, or asking for help."

Steve Jarvis

Weston and Sandon - Steve Jarvis

Steve Jarvis currently represents the parishes of Clothall, Rushden, Sandon, Wallington and Weston on North Hertfordshire District Council and is standing for re-election. He is a member of the Council's Overview and Scrutiny Committee and the Baldock Area Committee (which covers the Weston and Sandon area). Steve has been arguing that the Council could generate income from "commercialisation" - raising money from things like running a crematorium or providing housing to rent at market rates - to generated money to protect services and avoid charges like the brown bin tax, but unfortunately the Conservative cabinet have failed to take forward any of the opportunities effectively. Steve has lived in Graveley with his wife Sal for more than 30 years. His children, now in their thirties, went to school in Graveley and Letchworth. Steve is also County Councillor for Royston West and Rural and has been a Parliamentary candidate on three occasions. For more information about Steve you can visit www.stevejarvis.org.uk.
