I am not a career politician, I am a geologist who has worked around the world, helped set up and run two listed energy companies, and seen them grow into successful businesses. I know how business works, how the world works, and can see how our politics is simply not working.

The three main challenges I see are the economy, climate change, and our increasingly unequal society. We will not fix any of these unless we start afresh. The Liberal Democrats will bring in the reforms we need - fair votes, fair taxes, a fair start for our young people, and a new low carbon economy, not just because it's good for the planet, but because it is good for all of us.

I've lived in Hertfordshire for 20 years, for the last five in Lemsford village with my wife and two daughters. I want to see communities such as ours given a greater say, for example in dealing with the threat to our Green Belt from the over-development of Stevenage and Luton Airport. It's time that government started trusting people and their communities to decide for themselves.

This election could be a momentous one. It could be the one where UK politics is changed forever and we start to look forward rather than back.
