Lib Dems fight Hitchin's lorry madness4.15.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 21st May 2009
Two years ago, local residents banded together to fight the blight of large metal lorries driving through their area regardless of the local impact. However, Conservative-run County and District Councils have failed to act. Lisa Courts, Liberal Democrat campaigner for Hitchin North, has been working hard to get things changed. Lisa is also campaigning for people in the St Michaels Road area who suffer from noise and pollution from the movement of the scrap by rail. This has been hard and, at times, very frustrating work but Lisa says, "People have the right not to be woken up at 3 in the morning by the movement of heavy goods vehicles. They also have the noise and dust to contend with, which covers their homes and cars. The County & District Councils need to take ACTION to enforce the conditions that are placed on businesses which operate in the industrial area." Lisa, who lives in Cadwell Lane, added "Both Conservative-run Councils have also failed to respond to calls for a pedestrian phase at the traffic lights at the Cadwell Road crossing. This means that local residents have to take 'their lives in their hands' as they cross the road here."
Lisa and her fellow Liberal Democrats believe there has been too much talk and not enough action.
