Alison Steer was amongst a large group of LibDem county and district councillors who accompanied St Albans parliamentary candidate Sandy Walkington (www.sandy4stalbans.org) and housing portfolio holder Cllr Aislinn Lee to Westminster to give evidence to the all party Council House Committee.

In 2008/9 the government will be grabbing £9.7M from the rental income of the district council, equal to 46p in every pound paid by council tenants. Cllr Lee commented: "How is it fair that tenants are paying for houses to be built and maintained elsewhere in the country? St Albans runs an efficient housing service, but think what it could do if it did not have to pay this massive stealth tax out of its rent receipts - it would allow us to do far more to promote sustainable homes and build on the success of the eco-house in Smallford, for example."
