The town of Hitchin and the surrounding villages return twenty members to North Hertfordshire District Council of whom four are Liberal Democrats. The District itself is Conservative controlled.
Hitchin has fantastic rail links into London and has become a commuter base for the capital. Although a large number of residents also work locally in Stevenage and Luton.
Hitchin has seen lots of housing development over the past five years, much of it associated with Government driven targets for more housing. There is a particular threat from the East of Luton development plans which could engulf the green belt that seperates the towns. The growth in traffic at the expanding Luton Airport also presents its own environmental problems.
Hitchin is also experiencing difficulties over the development of its Churchgate shopping centre. After much debate and little physical progress the planning process is about to reach a critical stage. The development of a scheme which is at the same time viable, meets the aspirations of the townspeople and contributes to - rather than detracts from - the Town's already considerable "sense of place," is going to be difficult.
This and other planning and development issues have lead to the District Council losing the confidence from time to time of the various town amenity groups.
